Consultant ER

Job Description and Requirements

Job Holder:


3.0 Organizational relationships:

3.1 Responsible to : Director of ER/designee.

3.2 Responsible for : Senior Registrars, Registrars, Residents and Interns as assigned.

3.3 Liaises with : Medical, nursing and non-medical staff, ancillary department staff, patient and families.


Provide high quality of care to all emergency patients in accordance with hospital policy and procedure. Highly trained in modern aspects of emergency practice and utilize in the best advantage of ER Department function.

5.0 Duties and Responsibilities:

5.1 Act as a physician in-charge during clinical shift and supervise ER junior physicians and medical staff assigned in ER to ensure that their assigned duties and responsibilities satisfactorily discharge.

5.2 Assesses and refers ER patients under his/her care to appropriate speciality in accordance with the hospital policy and procedures.

5.3 Act in a consultative capacity to ER physicians and undertake direct patient consulting duties when required to provide optimal patient care.

5.4 Establish and maintain professional standards for quality patient care in ER.

5.5 Introduce and maintain effective on-going educational in-service program for ER staff while ensuring continuity of patient care.

5.6 Supervise the overall smooth and effective function of the department.

5.7 Membership in the Medical-ER Department Committee and participate in any other hospital committee as necessary.

5.8 Participates in the department's administrative duties and perform other tasks or duties within the context of the position.

5.9 Complies with the standards and regulations outlined in the Medical Staff By-laws.
5.10 Comply with the standards laid down by the approved International Accreditation Standards

6.0 Duties and Responsibilities (Cont’n):

6.1 Through the chain of command and/or occurrence variance report, identifies any occurrence not consistent with the operation of the hospital or standard of service for patients, employees or visitors and situations that put patients, staff or visitors at risk for injury or other harm.

7.0 Educational Requirements:

7.1 MBBS or equivalent from an institution recognized Medical Institution the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

7.2 Saudi Board of Emergency Medicine or Arab Board, American Board or Canadian Board in Emergency Medicine or its equivalent qualification acceptable to the Security Forces Hospital.

7.3 Current valid license to practice Medicine recognized by the Saudi Council for Health Specialties.

7.4 Current valid certification of Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), or obtaining these certifications within six months of commencement of employment.

8.0 Professional Experience:

8.1 At least 6 years experience preferably from a teaching hospital.

8.2 At least 3-5 years experience at a supervisory level in Emergency Medicine after gaining the high medical qualification(s) stipulated in section 7.2 (Educational Requirements) or equivalent acceptable experience.

8.3 Preferably with in a managerial level and with teaching experience in the medical field.

9.0 Specialized Knowledge:

9.1 Must be well versed in the field of his/her sub-speciality

9.2 Fluent in written and spoken English. Fluency in written and spoken Arabic is preferred.

9.3 Emotionally stable and in good general health, able to work extended hours under stress.
